February in Review

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds  (2017, PS4 Pro) Horizon Zero Dawn  was one of my favorite games in 2017. It was a fresh take on the open-world design that had grown stale in recent years. The world was interesting and vast without being cluttered and overwhelming. Some open-world games I have played legitimately intimidate me with how large they are and their seemingly never ending checklist of tasks. While the world of Horizon  is undoubtedly large I never felt overwhelmed in the way I do in the Assassin's Creed  franchise and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt  (I still loved it). The Frozen Wilds  is an expansion onto the main game essentially opening up a new region on the map and filling that region with new quests, characters, enemies, and collectibles. Doing the main story and side quests in the expansion took me about 10-12 hours and I felt like I did everything besides maybe one or two errands and grabbing the collectibles. Shadow of the Colossus review

So, what have I been missing all these years? Shadow of the Colossus Platform: PS4 Pro Release date: February 6th, 2018 Developer: Team Ico (Original), Bluepoint Games (remake) Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment Shadow of the Colossus  was originally released in late 2005 towards the end of the PS2's lifetime. The game released to stellar reviews and is heralded by many as one of the greatest video games of all time. I have always meant to go back and play this game but was never able to get around to it, until now. It was announced last year that a full remake of the game would release in February 2018 on PS4. I decided then that I would finally pick up the game and see what all the fuss was about. Visually, the game is stunning. I ran it on my PS4 Pro with a 4k HDR enabled TV. I ran the game in "performance" mode, which scales down the 4k textures in order to increase the framerate to 60 fps. For the most part the framerate held stead

January in Review

There were no new releases I was interested in during January so I spent the month marking a few video games and movies off my backlog. Assassin's Creed Origins  (Ubisoft, 2017) - Xbox One X Mild spoilers.....be warned. Before picking up Origins  I had not played an Assassin's Creed game in over two years. Back in 2015 I played about 10 hours of Syndicate  before deciding that I had zero interest in completing the game so I put it down for good. Ubisoft decided to hold off on the franchise in 2016 and let the feature film have it's place in the spotlight (Bad idea, if anything the film hurt the franchise more than helped it). Jumping forward to 2017, Ubisoft unveiled Origins  and the hype slowly began to build for me. I did not buy the game at launch but I did buy a Xbox One X in November. When I started seeing how well the game was being reviewed and how great it looked in 4k with the Xbox One X I decided to pick it up during the Black Friday sales. I dabbled with th
